Researching into 5 channels:
1.
My first
source of research is watching YouTube videos. Tyler the creator is seen as a
very alternative and bizarre person.
Here is some links to the videos I watched:
In this video you can see he is portraying
some sort of story, however the story is never finalized and that is shown in
most of his videos. The idea of him building up some story but never finishing it.
It’s a messy concept from Tyler the creator but I have to follow it to make it
seem as if Tyler designed it himself. There is never a real structured plot in
his videos but you know that he is trying to portray some sort of image to the
viewers.
Now the way I know this is by this
interview he did about the album its self.
What I don’t like about the video is that
it has a lot going on at once which makes it hard for the viewers to understand
what the story is, I want mine to be a slow and peaceful.
. From this video I took some inspiration the
effects he used, like tripling himself in one shot, I think this is a great opportunity
for me to use in the promotional video.
In this interview he speaks about some of the
songs and the reason about the album itself. Researching videos about some musician isn’t
just about the music videos, it’s about researching interviews of them and
understanding the real depth of the album and that’s what I’ve done. Tyler’s
vehicle of delivery throughout the album is just that—his car and the growth of
flowers. Tyler uses driving as a metaphor for his journey through life, he raps
about driving away from his problems and fears, almost crashing, switching
gears, and touches on what owning a car means to him outside of, you know,
getting somewhere. The point is Tyler the creator is portraying that you have
to believe in yourself.
This is one of Tyler the creator’s music videos on flower
boy, I noticed that in lot of his music videos he uses very bright colours and
soft focus, he uses this in flower boy to portray that whatever happens you can
get through it, I need to make sure that in my video I portray that as well. The
video once again presents vibrant colours and happiness despite the sadness of
songs therefore showing belief. From this video I took some inspiration of the
shots he used and the effects to make them shots happen because I’m doing a
promotional video it will be about 2 to 3 minutes, but some of the angles that
Tyler the creator used I would like to implement in my video. Such as:
Channel 2.
My next channel of research is books and online.
Finding books about Tyler the creator isn’t easy, this where
I had to co-join the internet and books together, Tyler the creator has created
his own brand , GOLF and he’s designed look books , despite the fact the book
doesn’t have words , it gives an insight into Tyler’s mind and artistic
intensions because we see what he designs. This will help me as it gives me an
insight into Tyler’s thoughts on
fashion, which is alternative and different styles , he simply just doesn’t
care what people think, which is huge part of my project because I want my
promotional video to be different but still show that its promoting flower boy.
Channel 3
My next channel is researching websites and articles about
Tyler the creator, mostly everything is on the internet. I found a website
which talks about Tyler’s album in huge depth and analyses it thoroughly. I
found extracts such as: https://genius.com/albums/Tyler-the-creator/Flower-boy
(I might be reaching but I think this album plays out over the course of a year which is often the life cycle of a flower. The album starts at the beginning of the year when not much super exciting is happening, then we get to “See You Again” where the relationship starts to blossom (also the other song “See You Again” came out in March). Then things get really exciting in “Who Dat Boy” because flowers would start really growing at this point (the meme Who dat boi got really popular in April). “Pothole” is when the ‘road’ gets bumpy as school is coming to an end for most and that usually complicates relationships. “Boredom” is when it’s Summer, friends are on vacation, there’s not much to do during the day. “911” is in September when everyone gets back to school, also when a lot of flowers/plants start to die (leaving many lonely). “Droppin Seeds” is in September/October when most flowers go to seed and spread across the land. “November” is in November when there are few if any flowers left, they’ve all died and gone to their happy place. “Glitter” is in December when we see all the Christmas/New Years decorations, the year is coming to an end. The outro is the end of the year and acts as a reminder to enjoy life as it only happens once and is short.)
This extract helped me a lot as it showed how Tyler
the creator went around his album, now I’m doing a music video not an album,
however understanding the depths of the album helps me out and helps me produce
the music video its self, this led to me to coming up with idea of the time lapse of a flower growing in between
my music video because the album is about belief in something and Tyler has
belief in the flower growing.
Once again, I didn’t just research things about Tyler the creator,
I dipped into the world of alternative art again, because I believe that art
will help produce the promotional video.
I some people to review Tyler the creators album: flower
boy, so I could understand what people think of it from an outsider of this
bizarre music scene that Tyler the creator is in, here is what I got:
Tyler, the Creator blossoms as a rapper,
producer on Flower Boy,
his most beautiful and well-crafted album to date. – Oscar
Tyler
returns with an amazing album. Personally, one of my favorite albums of all
time; the vocal features along with Tyler’s multi-layered verses make this ART.
– lewis plummer
LowKeyTheOG
hit the nail on the head: The songs on the LP, “Flower Boy” are, indeed, listed
in chronological order. His comment shows a level of intellect and pure
understanding of the album, and it gets a strong “thumbs up” from me!
-- max march
Given
his personality, music, and usage of homophobic lines in the past, he isn’t the
stereotypical bisexual male. Given his sexuality, he isn’t the stereotypical hardcore
rapper. But this album is so good, it’s chill and I vison this field of flowers
when I listen to it. – Patrick.
As you can see they all like the album, however Patricks
review was the most important, mainly because he spoke about visons, I’m making
a promotional music video so I need to advertise this album in the best way
possible. I’ll use effects and colourisation to try and make it feel like a Tyler
the creator music video.
Channel 5
Tv shows.
Tyler the creator has released a tv show , It was called
nuts + bolts , this was released shortly after his album that I am promoting,
now this has no connection with flower boy however it helped me understand what
Tyler the creator is like in front of the camera , the shots that were used and
how it can influence my promotional video. I tried to research as much as i could about Tyler so i could understand his true meaning. because he is so alternative that its hard to try and be like Tyler.
Post modernism
Post modernism was a huge part of my project , mainly because it is the definition of Tyler the creator , he creates his own art which is what I wanted to with this project. i researched what is post modernism and how it links with my project .Tyler has a very unique style when it comes to the creation of his music videos; he likes to push the boundaries of what is considered appropriate by many people. In his music video ‘BUFFALO’ he paints himself all white and is being chased by a mob of angry black people. The opening scene is him with a rope around his neck hanging from a tree, this is very similar to another of his music videos ‘Yonkers’ in which at the end of the song he appears to hang himself. This is a very touchy subject with some people and therefore has been a talking point when Tyler is mentioned. as you can see he has a bizarre past , however now he is better.
Tyler has still continued to keep up a consistent level of interesting music videos and has also citied fellow hip-hop artist Childish Gambino as one of the only hip-hop artists who actually cares about making good music videos. Furthermore, the majority of Tyler's music videos involve a performative type of music video. This type of music video allows Tyler to portray his energetic and eccentric character to the audience.

another resarch that benefited me massively was the youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/user/YapperDesign
